Nesting much? April 10, 2012

As I mentioned over on BabyCenter last week, I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning but I wasn’t quite sure if it was the usual spring cleaning, or nesting. Now, I’m pretty sure it’s nesting. I have never in my life wanted to clean as much as I have lately, and I can’t believe there are still more things on my list to clean!

Here’s a few things I’ve done lately that make me think it’s more than just spring cleaning:

  • I dusted the underside of the rocking chair in the baby’s room. Don’t know what made me think to check there…
  • Cleaned out the trap in the dishwasher (I’ve always left this to Chris in the past, and trust me, it’s not that easy to do while pregnant)
  • Took down the few mini blinds left in our house, soaked them in the tub and scrubbed down every square inch of them. Ew.
  • Unpacked my hubby’s suitcase from 3 weeks ago. Normally I leave his stuff for him to do, except I *had* to put it away and do the dirty laundry still inside it…
  • Yesterday, I cleaned the outside of the vacuum cleaner. I cleaned the inside of it last week, but for some reason it *needed* a good wipe-down.
  • I’ve organized just about every closet and drawer in the house
  • Dusted and cleaned just about every surface in the house

I just hope I can keep things this clean until the baby decides to make his or her arrival.

Still on the agenda:

  • Freezer meals for after the baby arrives (tomorrow is meatball & spaghetti sauce day)
  • Steam cleaning the couch (I’ve been putting this off for far too long)
  • Making a mobile for above the crib (I think I’m going to tackle this at this weeks ladies craft night)
  • Hanging the toilet paper art above the change table (really I should do that now, it’ll take less than a minute)
  • Cleaning the basement (never before have dust-bunnies creeped me out so much)
  • Finish cleaning all the windows (in my head I’m singing “I can see clearly now”)

I’m sure I’ll come up with more…

Getting crafty with crib sheets and change pad covers! February 16, 2012

Oh, jennybabble blog, how I’ve neglected thee. I’ve thought about you a lot over the past several months, but haven’t checked in at all. Long story short, I’m pregnant! And that’s why I haven’t written in so long. Well, sort of. Mainly because I’ve been writing here instead after winning a pregnancy blogging contest, but also because the “first” trimester “morning” sickness and fatigue took over my life well into the second trimester.

Anyhow, I’ve been busy and thought I’d share pics from my latest project. Chri and I both agree that a nursery is more for the parents than it is for the child. Babies can’t even see properly for the first 8-12 months of their lives, but we will be in there 12+ times a day or so changing diapers and feeding him/her, so we’d better like it. Turns out they don’t make cool crib sheets and change pad covers unless you order them online and spend big bucks to get them, so I made my own.

I followed this crib sheet tutorial, but added extra elastic to make the sheet fit more snugly. I made my own pattern for the change pad cover because I couldn’t find a good one that followed the curves of the change pad, but I did take inspiration for the two-coloured look from here. I made three sets, and love them!

Set #1

Set #2

Set #3

I’m pretty excited to not have generic, pastel-y sheets for this little kidlet! I’m currently working on a couple of other projects too… One is toilet paper art for above the crib (similar to, but different from what I made for the living room). Sounds tacky, but I think it’s going to be awesome!

The other project is considerably bigger and I’m a little nervous about it. I’m making my own cloth diapers. I’m going to make a bunch but also purchase some, so just in case they don’t work as well I’ll have a few back-ups on hand until I can order more. Too bad I don’t have friends out here with babies to test them out on ahead of time!

Have you got any fun projects going on right now?

Avoidance Shmavoidance September 2, 2010

After a summer of avoiding my blog, I finally summoned the..  Courage?  I don’t know…  Summoned the something to log in and and update my very few readers with my progress.  Of my very few readers, I have already received calls and/or emails from 3 or 4 asking how I’m doing (translation: are you crazy again?), so I think it’s high time I update you all.  I don’t really understand myself why I haven’t posted.  In fact, I only just logged on after a month or so a couple of days ago.  Anyhow, I am pleased to say that I am completely medication free.  I’m not sure if it’s for ever, or if it’s even for the best, but I’m quite happy that I’m not taking anything at the moment for the big D-word.  I figure it’s kind of like “six of one, half a dozen of the other.”  Either I’m a little wack-o off the meds, or I have to deal with side effects and limitations on them.  But seriously, I am doing alright so far.  I have had a few anxiety attacks and a few hard nights, but when I’m not going crazy I feel better, or perhaps more like myself, than I have in a couple of years.  Plus, I figure that I might as well try it for a bit and then decide what’s best.

In other news, I have made it to my new home in NY State, and am in a “state” of unpacking.  Most of the house is done, however, I’m at that awkward stage where I don’t really know where to put a whole bunch of stuff.  Oh yes, the fun “random” boxes at the end.  My poor hubby now has to deal with my stalled unpacking efforts.   If he had the time, I’m pretty sure the whole house would be unpacked and decorated by now.  You know, less than 2 weeks after moving in.  I just work a little differently…  I need to simmer on things until I know what to do.  I’m pretty bored so far, but I have also stopped myself from starting any projects or volunteering until the unpacking is finished.  That way, I have fewer excuses to avoid the boxes!

Anyhow, the waterworks are starting so I think I shall end this little update!

I ordered the music for Ysaye’s Poeme Elegiaque ages ago, but it still hasn’t arrived. Hubby Chri kindly got it for me through an inter-library loan and it arrived today. I don’t know how I’m going to memorize it before my recital AND finish memorizing the Bach and learning the Stravinsky… I’m freaked out!! Must go practice!!! After a piece of toast.

Also, the fridge isn’t cooling well enough… We’ve tried one solution and have one other to try if that doesn’t work, so lets hope we can fix it ourselves and don’t have to buy a new fridge! Aargh!
